Short description of the thesis

Work affects our lives far beyond the hours we spend on the job. This PhD thesis examines how working conditions shape health, productivity, and economic decision-making. The thesis consists of three studies: one on night shift work and mental health among Danish nurses, one on worker autonomy and firm performance, and one on the health and economic implications of reducing occupational exposure to diesel engine exhaust.

Together, the studies show how work environment economics can help quantify the consequences of workplace conditions for workers, firms, and society—and provide evidence that can inform better decisions about how work is organized and regulated
