‘Denmark in the Chair: EU Presidency 2025’ is a debate series discussing and exploring the challenges and potentials for Europe in a changing world order.
‘Europe in dire straits: Economic challenges and political turmoil’ is the first debate in the series; discussing the economic and political issues facing Europe in 2025 and onwards.
The event features a keynote presentation by Professor George Papaconstantinou based on his new book: ‘New World, New Rules’ co-authored with Professor Jean Pisani-Ferry (released November 2024).
As a former Finance Minister and Minister of Environment and Energy in Greece, as well as extensive experience from academia and international government and policy-making, Papaconstantinou brings an impressive contribution to current research and policy analysis. Papaconstantinou is currently the Director of the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute, Florence, and the EUI Dean of Executive Education. He is an economist with a PhD from the London School of Economics.
The keynote is followed by a panel debate where Papaconstantinou will be joined by Signe Krogstrup (Governor at Denmark’s Central Bank) and Carl-Johan Dalgaard (Professor and Chair of Economic and Environmental Council, Denmark). Members of the audience will be invited to contribute and ask questions towards the end.
The debate is moderated by Sara Hagemann (Professor of Political Science, KU)

Bios
Professor George Papaconstantinou is Director of the Florence School of Transnational Governance. He has served as Greece’s Finance Minister and subsequently Minister of Environment and Energy.He is an economist and holds a PhD from the London School of Economics. He has served government at the highest level, as cabinet minister, Member of Parliament and Member of European Parliament (MEP).
About 'New World New Rules'
In their new book ‘New World New Rules - Global Cooperation in a World of Geopolitical Rivalries’ Papaconstantinou and Pisany-Ferry outline a new agenda for global governance. They examine governance practices across several key policy areas – climate, health, trade and competition, banking and finance, taxation, migration and the digital economy – and consider what works and what doesn't.
Signe Krogstrup is member of the Board of Governors at the Danmarks Nationalbank (The Danish Central Bank). Previously, she has been advisor in the Research Department of the IMF, Assistant Director and Deputy Head of Monetary Policy Analysis at the Swiss National Bank, and a Visiting Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
Carl-Johan Dalgaard is Professor of Economics at the University of Copenhagen and Chairman of the Danish Economic Councils (“overvismand”).
Sara Hagemann is Professor of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH). Prior to joining UCPH, Hagemann was at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where she has held a number of senior positions, latest as Associate Professor and Academic Director at the LSE School of Public Policy.
